GDP-compliant cold chain packaging for the pharma sector: what does that mean?

The pharmaceutical sector places the highest demands on cold chain packaging: temperature accuracy within narrow ranges, validated performance, and complete documentation. What is GDP-compliant cold chain packaging and why is it important?

What is GDP?

GDP stands for Good Distribution Practice: the European standard for the distribution of medicinal products. The guideline describes how pharmaceutical products must be transported from manufacturer to end user without compromising their quality, efficacy, or safety. For cold chain packaging, this means three things:

  1. Validated temperature performance — the packaging must demonstrably be able to maintain the correct temperature under specified conditions
  2. Temperature monitoring — every shipment must be monitored and the temperature profile documented
  3. Traceability — what was packed with which materials, for whom, when, and how it performed

What distinguishes GDP packaging from standard cold chain packaging?

Validation reports

For pharmaceutical applications, we provide validation reports documenting the packaging’s performance under various ambient temperatures. For example: "maintained within 2-8 °C for 48 hours at an outside temperature of 25 °C, with 4 PCM elements preconditioned at 5 °C".

Material consistency

Pharmaceutical packaging is produced in series with strict tolerance requirements for wall thickness, density, and insulation performance. Our pharma range meets these consistency requirements.

Data loggers

Every pharmaceutical shipment should include a data logger that records the temperature profile. Upon arrival, the recipient reads the logger — if the temperature deviated at any point, this is traceable.

Which products are suitable?

Our pharmaceutical packaging solutions typically combine:

  • A thermal box or insulated box with VIP panels
  • PCM elements (Phase Change Material) preconditioned to the target temperature
  • A calibrated data logger
  • Documentation and shipping instructions
