Shipping vaccines and biological medicines chilled
Shipping vaccines and biological medicines under refrigerated conditions
The transport of vaccines and biological medicines is one of the most highly regulated activities in pharmaceutical logistics. Temperature ranges are strict, and the consequences of an excursion can be serious.
Standard temperature ranges
- 2 – 8 °C: most vaccines, insulins, biologicals
- 15 – 25 °C: controlled room temperature
- -20 °C: some mRNA vaccines
- -70 °C: deep-freeze conditions for specific vaccines (dry ice required)
GDP compliance is mandatory
GDP guidelines apply to the distribution of medicines. Key elements include:
- Qualified packaging solutions (with test data)
- Continuous temperature monitoring during transport
- Full documentation of transport conditions
- Procedures for temperature excursions
- Validated preparation times for packages
The right packaging solution
For 2-8 °C shipments (the most common requirement), we offer:
- Polystyrene Boxes with validated insulation performance
- Special conditioned gel packs (not frozen ice — too cold!)
- Temperature loggers for monitoring during transport
- Insulating base sheets and top layers
Important: preconditioning
Conditioned gel packs must acclimatize at room temperature for several hours before use. Packs that are too cold can damage vaccines by freezing them. Always follow the validated procedure.
Documentation
Each shipment should include:
- Packing and shipping procedure (SOP)
- Temperature log (read out after receipt)
- Proof of shipment and track & trace
- Any deviation report
