Container liners for food and pharma

Container liners for food and pharma

A thermal container liner for food and pharma is an insulating inner lining in a sea container that limits temperature swings along the way. For food products, fish, meat and pharmaceutical products, such a container liner helps preserve the quality of the cargo, without the cost of active cooling. At Cooled Solutions you will find the container liner for food in four sizes, available from stock and from our own production since 1972.

Below you will read when a liner suits food or pharma and where the limit lies.

What does a thermal container liner do for food?

The liner lines the inside of the sea container with reflective, aluminum-coated bubble foil. A sea container without insulation is sensitive to external temperature swings. With a liner the swings become smaller, and that helps preserve quality and freshness.

It is passive insulation. So the liner does not cool and adds no cold. It protects against heat, cold and moisture. That is why it is an alternative for cargo that is temperature sensitive but does not need to go in a reefer.

In our product descriptions we name as applications the transport of temperature-sensitive food products, fish and meat, and storage of products with strict temperature requirements. The same goes for chocolate, oil and wine: they are sensitive to heat, and that is what the liner does something about.

A container can reach 60 °C in summer and stand in frost on winter routes. A container liner is meant for products that cope poorly with that.

Container liner for pharma: what can it do and not do?

For a container liner for pharma, we name pharmaceutical and biotech shipments as an application. The liner limits temperature swings during sea freight of sensitive products. It promises no more than that.

We make no statements about certifications or about a specific temperature range. You can read which requirements apply in what are GDP guidelines. Cargo that must stay strictly refrigerated belongs in a reefer. The blog about shipping medicines safely refrigerated abroad gives more context on this.

Thermal liner shipping: the same solution under other names

This product is also called thermal liner shipping or shipping thermal liner. Insulated container liner and thermal container liner also mean the same product: a thermal liner that is placed in the container for sea freight. With us that is the sea container insulation liner, per container type.

You can read more about the names and the difference with container insulation in the blog container liner or container insulation.

Which size fits your container?

The liner is made for one container type and fits it exactly:

TypeLiner size
20DV589 x 233 x 233 cm
40DV1,200 x 233 x 233 cm
40HC1,200 x 233 x 269 cm
45HC1,335 x 233 x 269 cm

Which size belongs with which container is explained in container liner 20DV, 40DV, 40HC or 45HC. The liner is easy to place without specialist tools and, when handled with care, suitable for reuse.

Placing the container liner

The installation guide has 9 steps with photos. You start by unrolling the liner on the container floor and finish by zipping up the door cover.

The liner insulates the cargo space, not the individual package. For refrigerated boxes or fresh produce, also look at our cooling packaging. For single pallets, look at the insulated pallet covers.
