Thermal pallet cover or refrigerated truck? When passive insulation is enough
Short answer: for trips up to around 12 hours, transfer moments and multimodal transport, a thermal pallet cover is often sufficient in practice — at a fraction of the cost of refrigerated transport. For long journeys with a strict temperature regime (such as pharma at 2–8 °C over several days), active cooling remains the standard. Here is where the line runs.
What exactly does a thermal pallet cover do?
A thermal pallet cover (also called an insulated pallet cover or thermal cover) is a flexible, reflective cover placed over a pallet, roll container or ULD. It does not cool actively; it forms a passive insulating layer that keeps out heat transfer, solar radiation and moisture. The result: the temperature inside the load changes far more slowly than without protection.
When is passive insulation enough?
- Short and medium trips. For city distribution and journeys of a few hours, a well-fitting cover — especially combined with coolants — keeps the load safely within range.
- Transfer moments. The biggest temperature risk is not the drive but the wait: at the dock, on the apron, in the cross-dock. That is exactly where a thermal cover protects.
- Air freight. In air cargo, pallets and ULDs sometimes sit unprotected on the apron for hours in full sun or frost. Thermal covers are the standard solution there — a refrigerated truck does not drive into an aircraft.
- As a safety net alongside active cooling. Even inside a refrigerated vehicle, a cover adds stability during frequent door openings and bridges breakdowns or waiting times.
When is active cooling required?
Choose a refrigerated truck or reefer when the load must stay within a narrow band for days, for extremely long transit times without stops, or when regulations require continuous active cooling with temperature logging. Passive insulation slows temperature change but does not stop it entirely.
The cost difference
Refrigerated transport is more expensive per trip and often scarce in peak periods. A reusable thermal pallet cover is a one-off purchase that lasts dozens to hundreds of trips. For many shippers, the combination of standard transport + thermal cover + coolants is therefore the most cost-effective route — without compromising product quality.
Practical rules of thumb
- Always load products at the correct starting temperature; a cover holds temperature, it does not create it.
- Combine with gel packs as an extra buffer in warm weather.
- Make sure the cover fits snugly around the pallet or ULD — gaps are heat leaks.
- Run one trial shipment with a data logger; then you know exactly what happens in your chain.
