An insulated box keeps your product at temperature during transport. Which one suits you best depends on how long your shipment is in transit, how much you send, how important sustainability is and whether you want reusable or single-use packaging. Cooled Solutions produces and supplies the full range, from classic polystyrene to recyclable cardboard and reusable EPP. Below you'll find what each type excels at.

Which insulated box suits your shipment?

EPS boxes (polystyrene) — maximum insulation and protection

The EPS box is the classic insulated box: high insulation value, sturdy and shock-resistant. Ideal for meat, fish, pharma and anything where protection and insulation come together. Choose a thin wall for short trips or a thick wall for 24 to 48 hours.

Cardboard insulated boxes — 100% recyclable alternative

Our cardboard insulated boxes (Eco Coolbox, honeycomb and insulation boxes with TempGuard) offer insulation comparable to EPS, but after use they simply go in the paper recycling. The sustainable choice for brands that want plastic-free packaging.

Thermal boxes — foldable and pallet-efficient

The thermal box combines a cardboard outer box with a 4-layer or 6-layer insulated bag. Because the box is delivered flat, up to 5× as many fit on a pallet — a major advantage in storage and transport. Ideal for fresh e-commerce and meal-kit boxes.

EPP boxes — strong and reusable hundreds of times

The EPP box is stronger and more resilient than EPS and lasts hundreds of return cycles. The right choice for closed-loop systems such as healthcare logistics and lab transport.

How does an insulated box work in practice?

The insulation comes from the material and from the way you pack. The thicker the wall or the more insulation layers, the longer the contents stay at temperature. Just as important is the filling: empty space is your enemy. Pack as tightly as possible and place the cooling elements on top of the product, because cold air sinks and cools evenly that way. The cooling time further depends on the outside temperature, the transit time and the number of cooling elements.

What are insulated boxes used for?

  • Meat, fish and dairy. Chilled and frozen transport, often with absorbent pads against meltwater.
  • Meal kits and fresh e-commerce. Lightweight, cost-effective packaging for next-day delivery of fresh products.
  • Pharma and medical. Cold-chain transport in the 2-8 °C range, with cooling elements or PCM packs.
  • Frozen. Combined with dry ice, the contents stay frozen for over 48 hours.

Which insulated box is best?

There is no single best choice — it depends on your priority. For maximum insulation and protection, choose thick-walled EPS. For sustainability, cardboard or honeycomb. For reuse, EPP. For storage and transport savings, the foldable thermal box. Not sure? Frequently asked questions

Which insulated shipping box do I need?
That depends on your priority. Maximum insulation and protection: thick-walled EPS. Sustainability: cardboard cool box or honeycomb. Reuse (closed loop): EPP. Storage and transport savings: foldable thermal box. Portable use on the go: a mobile cool box. If you are unsure between two options, request a sample.
How long does a cooling box stay cold?
In practice, roughly 12 to 48 hours, depending on the type, wall thickness or number of insulation layers, the number of gel packs, and the outside temperature. A thin-walled EPS box achieves around 8–12 hours, a thick-walled one with gel packs 24–48 hours, and with dry ice, the contents remain frozen for well over 48 hours.
What is the difference between EPS, cardboard and an insulated box?
EPS (Styrofoam) provides maximum insulation and the strongest protection. Cardboard cooling boxes offer comparable insulation but are 100% recyclable. The thermal box is a cardboard box with a separate insulated liner that is supplied flat, allowing you to save significantly on storage and transport. The choice mainly comes down to protection versus sustainability versus storage efficiency.
Do I need to order gel packs separately?
Yes, for most cooler boxes, you order gel packs or gel packs separately. A cooler box insulates, but does not cool by itself. Place the gel packs on top of the product for even cooling. Our mobile cooler boxes are supplied with 2 gel packs as standard.
Do you supply custom-made insulated boxes?
Yes. As a Dutch manufacturer with an extensive range of molds, we can often find a size close to your requirements, even outside the standard range. We usually produce fully custom solutions within 2 to 6 weeks. Request a quote for your specific situation.
